June, much loved by children as a time when school is out and the summer stretches out as possibility. As adults, the long days of June invite us into a quieter kind of wisdom. At the summer solstice, light stretches almost beyond measure, lingering into the evening as if creation itself does not want to let go of the day. In the Benedictine tradition, light is never only physical. It is a reminder of God’s steady presence woven through ordinary life – in gardens growing, meals shared, psalms prayed, and moments of rest.
Summer can tempt us toward busyness, “getting caught up”, but Benedictine spirituality calls us back to balance – something I still struggle to achieve. Saint Benedict understood that holy living is not found in endless striving to do more but in rhythms that honor prayer, work, community, and renewal. The solstice invites us to pause long enough to notice what is flourishing within and around us. What in our lives is bearing fruit? What needs tending? What calls for gratitude, especially what calls for gratitude?
As sunlight fills the earth, may we become people who bring light: offering hospitality to strangers, care for creation, compassion for the overworked and weary, and hope in anxious times. June reminds us that growth is often quiet and gradual. Seeds planted in faith, kindness, and justice do not bloom overnight, yet God continues the hidden work of transformation. In these bright summer days, may we learn again the Benedictine art of paying attention — receiving each hour as gift, each person as blessing, and each moment as an invitation to seek God in all things.
Be assured of the prayers of the staff members of our Benedictine Retreat Centers and our hope that as you live the days of June you are able to slow down and enjoy the beauty of leisure and prayer. Our retreat centers are always ready to welcome you and offer ways to nourish your soul.
